Essen's 18th Environmental Prize Honours Local Sustainability Projects
The 18th Essener Umweltpreis, an award honouring projects that benefit society and improve local life, is set to take place in Essen in 2025. Mayor Thomas Kufen will serve as the patron of the ceremony. The award, with a total prize money of 12,000 euros, is organised by the city administration and supported by BANK IM BISTUM ESSEN eG, contributing 10,000 euros.
Entries are welcome from diverse sectors, including climate and environmental projects, neighbourhood initiatives, school projects, and social projects with an environmental focus. Projects implemented within the last two years, with current measures completed by the end of January 2026, are eligible. The 'Fairtrade' special prize, worth 2,000 euros, seeks projects that promote fair trade and connect it with other topics like gender equality or diversity. Melanie Bayo from the environmental department can provide more information.
An expert jury will assess the entries and announce the winners in a ceremony scheduled for December. The award focuses on projects that bring social benefits and enhance the quality of life locally.
The Essener Umweltpreis, now in its 18th edition, continues to recognise and reward projects that make a positive impact on the environment and society. With a total prize money of 12,000 euros, including the 'Fairtrade' special prize, it encourages and supports initiatives that contribute to a better, more sustainable future for Essen.
