EU Launches First Clean Trade and Investment Partnership with South Africa

The European Union has initiated its first Clean Trade and Investment Partnership (CTIP) with South Africa, launched in March 2025. This new approach aims to align EU external action with industrial policy objectives, fostering cooperation on clean energy and clean tech, and reshaping global supply chains.

CTIPs are designed to be agile and targeted, catering to the specific business interests of the EU and its partners. They aim to fill gaps and create new forms of cooperation, offering clear demand signals and aligning industrial policies. Transparency is key to maintaining credibility, with clear financial flows and timelines for delivering on commitments.

Our organization, in collaboration with civil society, has published a joint policy brief addressed to the European Commission and Parliament. This paper targets institutional decision-makers, influencing their policies and strategies concerning partnerships with civil society and beneficiary groups within the EU. The success of CTIPs relies on a shared understanding of objectives between the EU and its partners.

CTIPs, as part of the Clean Industrial Deal, are set to reshape global news dynamics. By fostering cooperation on clean energy and tech, and supporting regulatory cooperation, they aim to create new opportunities and strengthen EU external action. The EU's first CTIP with South Africa marks a significant step in this direction.
