European Retail Sales Mixed in September: Denmark, Portugal Struggle While France, UK Grow

The European retail sector experienced a mixed bag of results in September, with some countries seeing significant declines while others reported growth. Denmark and Portugal faced substantial drops in sales, while France, Germany, and the UK saw increases.

Denmark and Portugal bore the brunt of the decline in September. Denmark saw a 5.9% reduction in sales, while Portugal suffered the worst result with a 9.7% year-on-year decrease. Meanwhile, Spain and Italy also faced decreases of 6.8% and 3.4%, respectively.

On the positive side, France, Germany, and the UK reported increases of 3.8%, 1.4%, and 2%, respectively. Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Latvia also saw growth in commercial sales at 9.5%, 8.9%, and 4.9%.

Looking at the broader picture, retail sales in the eurozone decreased by 0.4% year-on-year in October, while the European Union remained stable. However, no direct comparison could be found for textiles, clothing, and footwear across Eurozone countries in October.

The September sales figures highlight the varied state of the European retail sector. While some countries like France, Germany, and the UK saw growth, others such as Denmark, Portugal, Spain, and Italy faced significant declines. As we move into the winter months, the impact of these trends on the overall European economy will be closely watched.
