Expanded residence inventory boosted by municipal communities
Berlin, Germany - Berlin's municipal housing companies are set to expand significantly in the coming years, with groundbreaking planned for another 5,681 apartments this year. This announcement was made by Christian Gaebler, the Senator for Urban Development, on December 31, 2024.
As of the same date, the companies managed a total of 365,161 apartments, an increase of 3,525 from the previous year. This growth is part of a larger plan to reach a target of managing around 400,000 apartments by the end of 2026.
In the past year, construction began on another 4,070 municipal apartments in 25 new construction projects. Of these, approximately 3,461 apartments were newly built.
The expansion of Berlin's municipal housing stock is a significant step towards addressing the city's housing needs. Around a quarter of the 1.7 million rental apartments in Berlin are in municipal hands, making these companies a crucial player in the city's housing market.
The municipal company Berlinovo, with a special status, owns approximately 30,000 apartments and is not included in the statistics.
Looking ahead, the future goals for Berlin's municipal housing companies are clear. By continuing to expand their stock and manage more apartments, they aim to provide affordable housing options for more Berliners.
On a separate note, the current weather in Berlin is partly cloudy and mostly dry, providing a pleasant backdrop for the city's ongoing construction projects.
