Expansion of authorized farming zones in An Giang Province to bolster agricultural exports
In the An Giang Province of Vietnam, a significant effort is underway to enhance the quality and reputation of local farm produce. The province has issued 20 codes for packaging facilities and plans to issue 25 more this year, as part of a broader initiative to meet the increasingly stringent demands of both domestic and international markets.
The growing area codes, unique identifiers for specific growing areas, play a crucial role in this initiative. They help authorities control various aspects of production, including pesticide residues, production methods, and post-harvest preservation. As of now, An Giang Province manages 1,280 growing area codes covering more than 46,264 hectares.
Rice, fruit trees, vegetables, industrial crops, and medicinal plants all have their designated growing area codes. Rice, with 743 codes across 35,997 hectares, has the largest number of codes, followed by fruit trees with 495 codes covering 9,596 hectares. The remaining codes are for vegetables, industrial crops, and medicinal plants.
The codes ensure compliance with food safety standards and meet export requirements, particularly in demanding markets such as the US, EU, and Japan. All coded growing areas and packaging facilities are subject to regular inspections to ensure compliance with plant quarantine and food safety regulations in importing countries.
The province also encourages businesses to adopt digital technologies in production management and traceability. This move is expected to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance consumer trust. In addition, the province plans to issue packaging codes based on market demand and aims to maintain and expand coded planting areas.
Training sessions for farmers and cooperatives on production processes and maintaining growing area codes are frequently organised. These sessions are crucial in helping the province meet its goals of enhancing the value and reputation of local farm produce.
An Giang Province has strengthened the issuance and management of growing area codes and packaging codes in recent years. This commitment to quality and transparency is expected to open up new export opportunities and improve the competitiveness of local produce in both domestic and international markets.
