Pope Francis' Legacy of Inclusivity and Respect

Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday following the airing of a show about Dorothy Day, leaves behind a legacy of inclusivity and respect for marginalized groups within the Catholic Church.

For some time before his death, the Pope had been sick, but his leadership marked a significant shift from traditional Vatican stances on LGBTQ rights. Pope Francis was known for his nuanced position on the issue, rejecting same-sex marriage but welcoming blessing rituals that affirm the care and dignity of LGBTQ individuals.

In 2023, he wrote the foreword to an Italian translation of Dorothy Day's autobiography, "From Union Square to Rome," admiring her efforts in fostering a culture that enables people to strive for justice and the cause of the oppressed. This admiration extended to his support for Dorothy Day, who is a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic Church.

Under Francis' leadership, pastoral care advanced to openly affirm LGBTQ individuals’ rights to be in families, call for decriminalization of homosexuality globally, and allow transgender people to participate as baptized members and godparents under certain circumstances. This shift was codified in Vatican policy documents, such as the 2023 document Fiducia Supplicans: On the Pastoral Meaning of Blessings, which permits informal blessings for same-sex couples without equating these to marriage.

Fr. James Martin, who traveled to Rome to pay homage to Pope Francis, had met and corresponded with him multiple times. In an address to U.S. Congress in 2015, Pope Francis praised Dorothy Day for her tireless work and faith, drawing a comparison between her and Thomas Merton, stating that their faith became dialogue and sowed peace in a contemplative style.

Analysis indicates Pope Francis’ approach sought to maintain Church doctrine while fostering inclusivity by respecting LGBTQ people’s inherent dignity and pastoral needs. This has been seen as a historic and pragmatic pastoral balance, distinguishing between doctrinal teaching and the pastoral outreach to marginalized groups.

Pope Francis' emphasis on inclusion inspired many Catholics and clergy advocating for expanded LGBTQ rights and ministries within the Church, although official Church doctrine on marriage remains unchanged. This legacy continues with Pope Leo XIV, who has affirmed the continuation of blessings for same-sex couples and expressed a pastoral desire to uphold dignity and outreach without doctrinal change.

In his final years, Pope Francis believed a nation can be considered great when it defends liberty, fosters a culture for full rights for all, and strives for justice and the cause of the oppressed. His passing leaves a void in the Catholic Church, but his legacy of inclusivity and respect will endure.
