Amidst bridge collapse incident, Dresden reveals open-air riverside lounge area - Following the bridge's collapse, Dresden liberates its terrace.
The Terrace Embankment in Dresden's old town, a busy traffic artery, has reopened following the collapse of the Carol Bridge last September. The reopening was announced by Dresden's Building Mayor, Stephan Kühn (Alliance 90/The Greens), and was welcomed by Dresden's Mayor, Dirk Hilpert (FDP), as a great relief for all road users in the city.
Before the bridge collapse, an average of around 20,000 motor vehicles passed through the area daily, according to Dresden's city administration. However, travel times significantly increased due to the closure of the Terrace Embankment. According to Hilpert, times that were about four to five minutes longer are now a thing of the past.
The reopening of the Terrace Embankment has been accompanied by various improvements. The roadway and sidewalks have been renewed, and the asphalt surface and markings have been repaired. The lighting on the Embankment has been expanded, and granite paving stones and curbs have been reinstalled.
The nearby bus parking lot for tourists will reopen next Monday, providing around 70 car and 22 bus parking spaces. The reopening of the Embankment is particularly beneficial for the upcoming Christmas tourism and Advent traffic in the city.
The Elbe cycle path on the Neustadt side is expected to reopen by early October. However, the planned reopening of the bike path on the opposite Elbe riverbank in Dresden's old town has not been explicitly stated in the available sources. Restricted ship traffic under the Carolabrücke resumed on February 18, 2025, after clearance and marking works. No specific date for the bike path reopening has been provided.
The Carol Bridge, a prestressed concrete bridge from the DDR era, partially collapsed in the early hours of September 11, 2024. No one was injured in the collapse. The demolition of the Carol Bridge has now been completed.
The reopening of the traffic arteries, including the Terrace Embankment, will restore the original state of the traffic system in Dresden. This is a significant step towards returning the city to its normal flow after the disruption caused by the bridge collapse.
