France's First Floating Wind Farm Begins Delivering Clean Energy
A groundbreaking milestone in energy has been reached in France. The Provence Grand Large floating wind farm, the country's first and the world's first project-financed floating offshore wind project, has been officially inaugurated. It began delivering clean energy to the grid in November 2024.
The farm, developed by a partnership of EDF, Enbridge, and CPP Investments, features three Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines installed on tensioned line floats. These floats were constructed by Eiffage Métal and assembled in collaboration with Smulders. The floating foundations were designed by IFP Energies Nouvelles and SBM Offshore.
The project, fully commissioned in June 2025, has a capacity of 25 MW. This is enough to generate the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 45,000 inhabitants. It marks a significant step in France's transition to renewable energy sources.
The Provence Grand Large floating wind farm is a testament to international collaboration and innovation in energy. With its successful commissioning and grid connection, it paves the way for more floating wind projects, both in France and globally.
