Germany's Deutschlandticket to undergo gradual price hikes from 2029

Berlin - Passengers using the popular Deutschlandticket for regional bus and train travel should prepare for increased prices starting in 2029. The coalition of CDU, CSU, and SPD has agreed that the share financed by users will gradually and responsibly rise after 2029.

The exact increase and timeline for the price hikes haven't been specified yet. However, the coalition is expected to provide more details in the future. As of this year, the monthly cost for the Deutschlandticket is €58 for nationwide local transport, an increase of around 18 percent from the previous price of €49.

The federal government and the states currently contribute €3 billion combined annually to compensate transport companies for revenue losses. However, the funds are only legally secured until the end of the year, as previously announced by the Union before the federal election.

In the coalition agreement, the parties also pledged to secure the financing of public passenger transport on a new legal basis and launch a modernization pact, aiming to maintain the status quo, absorb rising costs, and create more space for new transportation options.

Looking ahead, the coalition intends to implement a comprehensive rail reform for Deutsche Bahn (DB) in the medium term. While the specific plans and timeline for this reform are not yet clear, recent changes to Germany’s fiscal framework include a large infrastructure fund worth €500 billion, intended to finance transport, energy, and digitalization projects. This initiative may play a significant role in future rail reform efforts, although further details concerning DB’s specific reforms remain unclear.
