Steelworks in Kehl Stays Competitive, Joins Forces with Dutch Partners
Steelworks under consideration for a secure, forward-looking future by Kretschmann - Future-proof steelmaking, according to Kretschmann, is sustained by a single facility.
In the heart of the southwest, the Baden Steelworks (BSW) in Kehler Rhine harbor is geared up to maintain its competitive edge in the long haul, according to Minister President Winfried Kretschmann. "I deem this type of steelworks as absolutely sustainable," said the Green politician in Kehl, referring to the BSW. This steelworks model showcases an industrial circular economy as it recycles steel scrap for production.
With an extensive history in Germany, BSW considers itself one of the top electrosteelworks. As per the industry association Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl, BSW ranks seventh in the country for producing crude steel - based on 2022 figures. A significant challenge for the steel industry globally is the overproduction.
In an attempt to combat this issue and maximize productivity, BSW has aligned with the Dutch Van Merksteijn Steel Group. This group is one of Europe's largest wire processing companies. CEO Florian Glück revealed that the Kehler site hadn't been utilizing its full capacity in recent years and the partnership was a step towards rectifying that issue.
Approximately two months ago, the Südwest Group, to which the BSW belongs, formed a holding with Van Merksteijn in the Dutch city of Almelo. The new Reinforcing Steel Europe Group (RSE) now stands as a leading manufacturer of reinforcement steel in Europe, referring to steel bars for concrete components.
Previously, the family-owned Südwest Group comprised BSW, the Mosel steelworks in Trier, and eight wire processing plants. In total, they employed roughly 1,800 people.
While the Baden Steelworks in Kehl continues to strive towards efficiency and competitiveness in the European steel market, exact details about its current operational status and future plans with Van Merksteijn Steel Group can be gleaned from recent industry reports or official announcements. Such sources may contain up-to-date and precise information about the partnership's strategic developments and the impact on the steel industry.
