Gas prices for Ai-95 fuel reach all-time highs
In recent times, the price of AI-92 gasoline in Russia has been on the rise, reaching new highs due to production disruptions at major oil refineries caused by Ukrainian drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure.
These attacks forced the Novokuybyshevsk Refinery to fully stop production and halved output at the Ryazan Refinery, key suppliers in Russia. This has resulted in supply shortages and price surges on the wholesale market.
By mid-August 2025, the AI-92 gasoline price reached a new record high of about 70,729 rubles per tonne on the St. Petersburg exchange, equivalent to approximately 841 USD per ton. Wholesale prices have risen around 30% since the start of 2025, with a 34% increase since late December 2024 for AI-92 gasoline specifically.
At the retail level, prices have risen modestly but consistently. AI-92 gasoline reached between 57.61 to 57.99 rubles per liter in St. Petersburg and Moscow by August 2025, reflecting a 0.2% weekly increase and continuing upward trend. Compared to earlier 2025 figures, this is a significant rise from prices around 55.90 rubles per liter observed in late July 2025.
However, the gasoline price increase is slightly outpacing Russia's general inflation rate as of August 2025. While exact inflation rates are not stated here, reports indicate the government is concerned about fuel prices growing faster than inflation and is engaging with oil firms to contain the surge.
Interestingly, the price of summer diesel fuel has decreased slightly by 0.01% to 58,671 thousand rubles per ton.

The surge in wholesale prices of AI-92 gasoline, which has risen around 30% since the beginning of 2025, is attributed to production disruptions in the energy industry due to Ukrainian drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure. This price increase, despite a slight decrease in the price of summer diesel fuel, is slightly outpacing Russia's general inflation rate, causing concern among the government, who are engaging with finance sector entities to control the price surge.
