German Drivers: Old Paper Licenses Expire Jan 19, 2025
German drivers holding old navy licenses face an upcoming deadline. After January 19, 2025, these licenses will no longer be valid, potentially causing issues during traffic checks. The EU mandates an exchange for credit card format licenses, with a staggered process to avoid backlogs.
All driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged by January 19, 2033. However, those born in 1971 or earlier must do so by January 19, 2025. The exchange does not require an examination or medical tests, but certificates may be needed for truck and bus licenses.
The exchange process involves submitting a copy of ID/passport, a biometric passport photo, and the current driver's license. It can be done in writing without a personal appearance. The cost is up to €30.30, including shipping, and the new license will be sent later by the Federal Printing Office. If the old license was not issued by the city of Aschaffenburg's driver's license authority, a card file copy from the issuing authority is required.
Failure to exchange old paper licenses by the deadline may result in invalid licenses and potential issues during traffic checks. Drivers are advised to begin the exchange process soon to avoid last-minute rushes and ensure a smooth transition to the new format.
