In the ever-evolving landscape of Spain's energy sector, Iberdrola's hydro and wind projects are poised to make a substantial impact. These projects aim to supply approximately 10% of Spain's electricity consumption based on their renewable generation and strategic targets.

During the first half of 2025, Iberdrola distributed 44,871 GWh of electricity in Spain, a significant chunk of the country's total consumption. It's important to note that this figure represents Iberdrola's share only, with Spain's overall electricity consumption being larger.

Iberdrola boasts a global total installed renewable capacity of around 45 GW, with Spain being a key market. Their renewable portfolio includes wind, hydro, and other sources.

One of the most notable initiatives is Iberdrola's joint venture with Echelon Data Centres. This partnership aims to provide renewables-based energy for data centres in Spain, utilising Iberdrola's 22 GW renewable capacity and pumped-storage hydro for clean energy supply.

Spain's annual electricity consumption hovers around 250-300 TWh (250,000-300,000 GWh). Iberdrola's delivered electricity in Spain in H1 2025 (approximately 45 TWh) represents roughly 15-18% for six months. Given that renewables cover a substantial fraction of Iberdrola's supply, it's clear that the hydro and wind projects contribute a significant share of that.

Though the precise percentage of Spain’s overall electricity consumption supplied by Iberdrola's hydro plus wind is not explicitly stated, based on the volume Iberdrola distributes and their renewable capacity, an estimate of around 10% to 15% can be made.

While this article focuses on Iberdrola's renewable energy projects, it's worth mentioning Jaime Figueiredo, the Economics Editor and General Coordinator of Infographics, whose roles and positions are integral to the reporting and visualisation of such projects in the media.

The renewable-energy industry is significantly financing Iberdrola's ambitious hydro and wind projects, aiming to generate around 10% of Spain's electricity consumption based on strategic targets and renewable generation. Given Iberdrola's substantial renewable capacity and their share of Spain's electricity consumption, it's plausible that these projects will contribute a significant portion to the overall energy finance in Spain.
