Givenchy appoints Sarah Burton as its new creative director.
After a series of changes, French luxury fashion house Givenchy has announced that Sarah Burton will be taking over as the brand's creative director, effective immediately. This appointment comes following the departure of Matthew M. Williams, who stepped down from the position at the beginning of the year.
Sarah Burton, who previously held the position of creative director at Kering-owned Alexander McQueen, started her career at the fashion house as an intern in 1996. She was appointed creative director shortly after the death of Alexander McQueen in February 2010, and spent 13 years leading the brand before her departure last year.
Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board, expressed his delight at Burton's joining, stating that her unique vision and approach to fashion will be valuable to the brand. Alessandro Valenti, CEO of Givenchy, also expressed his excitement, adding that Burton's appointment marks a new chapter for the iconic fashion house.
Burton's first collection for Givenchy will be presented in March 2025. In the meantime, the autumn-winter collection for the brand, presented in February, was designed by the house's studio team. Matthew M. Williams' final show for Givenchy was a pre-fall 2024 collection presented in December.
The appointment of Burton comes at a challenging time for the luxury fashion industry. According to a report by Lara Ewen, LVMH's net profit dropped 14% in the first half of the year, and Kering's operating income dropped 42% in the same period. Despite these challenges, Toledano remains optimistic about Givenchy's future under Burton's direction, stating that the brand expects to continue innovating and captivating a global audience.
Burton will oversee both the women's and men's lines for Givenchy, and will work alongside the brand's outstanding teams in the exceptional workshops. It is anticipated that her unique creative vision will bring new energy to the brand, and that she will help Givenchy to continue its legacy of creating timeless and iconic fashion.
