Hyundai and General Motors Partner to Co-Develop Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors have announced a strategic collaboration to co-develop five new vehicles, set to launch by 2028. The partnership aims to leverage the complementary strengths and combined scale of both companies, delivering more choice to customers at a faster pace and lower cost.

The collaboration encompasses the development of a compact SUV, car, compact pickup, mid-size pickup, and an electric commercial van. Four of these vehicles will target the Central and South American markets, while the fifth, an electric commercial van for North America, is scheduled to begin production as early as 2028 in the U.S.

One of the key vehicles in this collaboration is the Kia PV5, which is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s innovative Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) architecture. The PV5 employs the Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service (E-GMP.S) and a Flexible Body System, allowing up to 16 variants through a modular building-block approach. This vehicle is designed for practicality and seamless conversions, targeting business and commercial applications with connected software and expandable accessories.

In the partnership, Hyundai leads the development of the compact vehicles and the electric van, including the Kia PV5. GM, on the other hand, leads the mid-size truck platform. Despite sharing underlying platforms, each vehicle will feature distinct interiors and exteriors specific to each brand.

The electric commercial van, which could potentially leverage platforms like the PV5’s PBV architecture, will be built in the U.S. at an EV-friendly plant yet to be officially disclosed. This commercial van is expected to bring a significant impact to the North American market by offering a versatile, scalable electric vehicle solution focused on commercial users, further integrating advanced technology and sustainability features.

The collaboration aims to reach more than 800,000 annual sales of these co-developed vehicles once production is scaled, indicating Hyundai and GM’s commitment to expand their footprint in both South and North American markets utilizing shared technology and platforms but with strong brand differentiation.
