Hazardous Material Incident on A23 Resolved Safely After 10 Hours
A hazardous material incident on the A23 (direction Norden) was successfully resolved after approximately ten hours. The incident, which involved a loaded sea container emitting a strong smell, did not disrupt traffic flow, with only the Steinburg rest area closed. Over 130 emergency services personnel were involved in the operation, ensuring public safety at all times.
The incident began when a pungent smell was detected during a routine customs check on a loaded sea container. The container, carrying various items including hazardous materials, was promptly secured, and emergency services were alerted. The German Red Cross provided emergency supplies to the rescue forces, while Steinburg disaster relief forces handled catering.
The fire department, along with hazardous materials squads from Dithmarschen and fire services from Pinneberg and Steinburg districts, worked tirelessly to unload the container. They discovered two damaged drums containing an insecticide on the last pallet, which was likely the source of the smell. Despite the nature of the incident, no one was injured, and there was no danger to the public.
The A23 traffic continued uninterrupted throughout the incident, with only the Steinburg rest area closed. Over 130 emergency services personnel successfully resolved the hazardous material incident after around ten hours. The cause of the incident was identified as damaged drums containing an insecticide, and there were no reported injuries or public danger.
