HM Revenue & Customs Releases the 171th Edition of Their Pension Schemes Newsletter

Starting from the 2024/25 tax year, all pension scheme reporting requirements will be handled through the Managing Pension Schemes (MPS) service, as announced by HMRC in its latest newsletter.

From now on, pension schemes must be enrolled and migrated to the MPS service to receive filing notices and submit pension scheme returns. This migration is mandatory, and a video guide is available to assist with the enrolment and migration process.

HMRC is moving its current Lifetime Allowance (LTA) protections look-up service to the MPS service, with the transition set to take place in late 2025. After the move, pension scheme administrators and authorised practitioners must use the MPS service to view LTA protections. Access to the MPS service requires registration, and only practitioners can view protections on the new look-up service via MPS.

Administrators and practitioners have been invited to test the new look-up service for LTA protections before the full transition. If a pension scheme has wound up, the scheme administrators must submit the pension scheme return before reporting the wind-up on an Event Report, again through the migrated MPS service.

The Managing Pension Schemes service is the new platform for scheme administrators and practitioners to handle reporting requirements. HMRC published Pension schemes newsletter 171 on July 30, 2025, detailing this change.

Key dates and details: - The move to MPS for the LTA protections look-up service is happening in late 2025. - Reporting for the tax year 2024/2025 onwards must be done via the MPS service. - Migration and enrolment to MPS are required immediately if not already completed. - Support for migration is available by contacting HMRC at [email protected].

In addition to this shift, the newsletter also reports on the inclusion of unused pension benefits in a saver's estate for inheritance tax purposes.
