Iconic AFL dynasty residence, undergoing full renovation, up for sale after 4 decades, priced at a hefty $2.2 million.
AFL Legend Mick Martyn's Childhood Home Up for Auction
The childhood home of Australian Football League (AFL) legend Mick Martyn, located at 58 Mirls Street in Newport, Melbourne, is currently listed for auction at $2.2 million. This Californian bungalow was once owned by Mick's father, Bryan Martyn, an AFL legend in his own right.
Bryan and his family purchased the house in 1984, and it became their cherished family home. After Bryan's passing in 2002 at the age of 71, his son Stephen Martyn took over ownership. Stephen, too, has lived there with his family.
The house has undergone extensive renovations that respect its period character, preserving features like ceiling roses and polished timber floorboards while adding modern amenities such as solar power and a double garage with a gym. Notably, the home also features Stephen's collection of pinball machines.
The property is set on a 662 square meter block and includes two living areas, a formal dining room with bi-fold doors leading outdoors, two bathrooms, a newly renovated laundry, and a garden with a prominent palm tree and weeping willow that Bryan Martyn particularly loved.
Mick Martyn, who played for the Kangaroos from 1993 to 2003, grew up in this four-bedroom, two-bathroom house with his four siblings. He won the Sydney Barker Medal for the Kangaroos' best and fairest player in 1996 and 1999, and later joined Carlton before retiring in 2003 due to a knee injury.
Interestingly, the rumpus room above the house's garage could be converted into a bedroom, providing additional living space for the new owners.
Before founding Able Industries Engineering in 1975, Bryan Martyn was known for his community work, including spending $250,000 to upgrade the Newport Football Club's rooms. Able Industries Engineering, based in South Kingsville and Spotswood, specializes in several industries, including defence and renewable energy. The company has contributed to several iconic Australian projects, including Crown Casino, Federation Square, Dreamworld, and Movie World.
As Mick Martyn's childhood home goes up for auction, it offers a unique opportunity for someone to own a piece of AFL history while enjoying a beautifully renovated Californian bungalow in the heart of Newport.
