India's Green Revolution: CII's Net Zero Mission and GIFT City's Platinum Rating
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been at the forefront of India's green revolution. In April 2021, it launched the IGBC Mission on Net Zero, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Meanwhile, in September 2021, GIFT City became India's first Greenfield Smart City to achieve the prestigious IGBC Green Cities Platinum rating.
CII's commitment to sustainability began in 2004 with the establishment of the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre. This centre facilitates India's transformation into a global leader in green businesses, with a target of 2022. Green buildings, which are resource-efficient in design, construction, operations, and maintenance, have been a key focus.
India's progress in renewable energy is evident. It has increased its installed power generation capacity from renewable sources to 38.5%, nearing its 2030 target of 40%. Prominent Indian companies like Tata Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, and Godrej have embraced eco-friendly practices, implementing the GreenCo rating system. CII-IGBC has also developed the 'IGBC Green Logistics Parks and Warehouses Rating System' in 2021, addressing social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
Over 6,780 green building projects have adopted IGBC green standards, with an aspiration to reach 10 billion sq ft by 2022. India has also reduced its emission intensity of GDP by 28% over 2005 levels, working towards its target of 33-35% by 2030.
As the world gears up for COP26 in Glasgow, with over 190 leaders discussing climate action to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, India's progress under CII's guidance is commendable. The country's commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as facilitated by the IGBC Mission on Net Zero, aligns with the global goal. The success of GIFT City in achieving the IGBC Green Cities Platinum rating serves as a testament to India's dedication to sustainable development.
