Inflation breakdown: identifying increasing costs of goods and services within Kazakhstan's economy

🤖 Hey there! Let's dive into the inflammation situation in Kazakhstan during April 2025. Spoiler alert: it's been a bit of a squeeze for the consumers.

Looks like the Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped by a hefty 9.7% compared to the same period last year, and it's all about that uneven distribution. Paid services saw one heck of a spike, with prices skyrocketing 14.5% compared to last year. Food ain't been cheap neither, with prices up 7.1%, non-food prices, 8.8%, and leisure and culture sector, a whopping 19.8%.

Healthcare, restaurants and hotels, and communications also had their own price hikes – 12.5%, 11.3%, and 16.5% respectively. Now, what's causing this price dynamic you ask? Well, it could be due to those pesky enterprises' utility costs rising or the growing demand for services.

In the food category, food products and non-alcoholic beverages took the bacon, with a 6.9% increase, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco products were far from cheap at 12.6%. Now, the good news? The "household equipment and maintenance" category was the smallest increase, up a relatively modest 5.1% compared to last year.

Coming back to the big picture, if we compare Apr '25 to Dec '20, the overall CPI has increased a staggering 63.5%. Some categories, like alcohol and tobacco, have even seen a 79.1% rise, while housing services weren't far behind at 74.9%. However, communications and transport have managed to keep it relatively low with increases of only 27.9% and 42.7% respectively.

In short, the analysis of the April '25 CPI alerts us to the continued inflation in Kazakhstan, meaning consumers will need to pull off some fancy budgeting tricks to stay afloat. And, our previous reports hinted that imported products on the Kazakh market are experiencing quicker price increases compared to local alternatives, which is directly affecting the overall inflation in the country. Catch you on the flip side!
