Innovafeed Expands Sustainable Insect Protein Production to Decatur, Illinois

Innovafeed, a French agri-tech company, is expanding its sustainable insect protein and oil production with a new facility in Decatur, Illinois. The company plans to begin designing a full-scale Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) vertical plant in 2025, opening in 2026, and producing significant amounts of BSFL protein and oil by the end of 2026 or 2027.

Innovafeed's ambitious project aims to reduce deforestation and carbon footprint. The company's BSFL oil provides a sustainable alternative to palm kernel and soybean oils, helping to preserve tropical nations' forests. The new facility, located adjacent to a corn processing plant run by ADM in Decatur, Illinois, will create around 150 jobs by 2030.

Innovafeed's industrial symbiosis model, which involves integrating businesses to share resources, is expected to reduce the plant's carbon footprint by 80%. The company plans to open a pilot BSFL plant by the end of 2023 and begin production in January 2024. By locating the facility near the source of co-products, Innovafeed reduces the need for drying and transportation, and allows for steam capture.

Innovafeed's expansion into Decatur, Illinois, brings sustainable insect protein and oil production to the region. The full-scale BSFL vertical plant, set to open in 2026, will contribute to deforestation reduction and create local jobs. The company's innovative approach to industrial symbiosis is expected to significantly lower the plant's carbon footprint.
