The recent launch of Li Auto's i8 SUV was met with controversy, as questions arose about the representativeness of a crash test video shown during the event. The video depicted a high-speed frontal collision between an i8 and a heavy-duty Chenglong truck, with minimal deformation to the i8 and significant damage to the truck's cabin.
Chenglong Truck, a subsidiary of Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor, argued that the test conditions were not representative of real-world traffic scenarios. They claimed that the test was misleading and questioned the credibility and authenticity of the video. Li Auto, however, defended the test, stating that it was conducted by an independent and nationally recognized third-party institute, the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd., aiming to assess the passive safety of the i8 in collisions involving large trucks—a relevant scenario for highways in China.
The controversy centered on whether the crash test scenario and results were realistic or representative of how vehicles actually interact in typical traffic. Li Auto reaffirmed its commitment to automotive safety and clarified that the Chenglong vehicle used in the video was a second-hand truck purchased and modified as a movable crash barrier, and the purpose of the test was not to evaluate the truck's safety performance.
Despite the controversy, the i8 was designed to meet China's latest regulatory standards for front, side, and rear crash protection. It was benchmarked to meet the highest ratings under both the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP Version 24) and the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI Version 23). The i8 reportedly sustained no deformation to critical structures, including A-, B-, and C-pillars, door beams, and no leakage or thermal issues were observed in the battery pack.
It is worth noting that Li Auto and Chenglong operate in separate vehicle markets, with no direct competition. The i8 was developed with a focus on improving cabin space, thanks to its front "short overhang" design, which reportedly performed well under impact conditions.
The incident has sparked a public debate and industry backlash, with Dongfeng Group, Chenglong's parent firm, expressing concern over the video's portrayal of its brand and opposing "involution-style competition." Li Auto, however, remains committed to ensuring the safety of its vehicles and improving industry standards for crash resilience and vehicle protection.
