Invitation for Proposals: Innovative Strategies Needed to Tackle CO2, Waste Management, and Urban Transportation Issues
The Climaborough project, coordinated by Anci Toscana, is a significant initiative that aims to promote affordable solutions in waste management, green energy, and sustainable mobility across eight European cities. Funded by the Horizon Europe research program with a contribution of around 11 million euros, this project brings together 28 partners from 15 European countries.
The eight cities participating in the first phase of Climaborough are Turin, Athens, Ioannina, Differdange, Grenoble, Sofia, Cascais, and Maribor. Each city has defined a specific challenge to address towards climate neutrality by 2030. For instance, Turin is focusing on textile waste collection, while Athens and Ioannina are likely addressing urban heat, social inclusion, and local regeneration in the Mediterranean zone.
Differdange and Grenoble, situated in continental climate zones, are working on sustainable urban mobility and green energy transition amid existing infrastructure. Sofia and Maribor are concentrating on affordable upgrades in waste and energy systems, and Cascais is revitalizing waterfront areas to balance climate neutrality goals and enhance liveability.
The project is not just about finding solutions but implementing them effectively. It focuses on low-cost, scalable actions in waste reuse and circularity, deployment of green energy solutions adapted to local contexts, and enhancing sustainable mobility options that are affordable and socially inclusive.
The new tender for Climaborough, worth 2.4 million euros, is now open to any economic operator. Up to 16 pilot projects, two for each of the eight cities, will be selected. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions in cities that consume 65% of the energy, contributing to a larger initiative to develop innovative solutions for European cities.
An online workshop will be organized on October 30 to inform potential candidates about the tender procedure for Climaborough. Interested parties are encouraged to attend and learn more about this exciting opportunity to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for European cities.
