Ireland's Minister O'Brien Announces €3.5 Billion Grid Investment for 2030 Renewables
Ireland's Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Daragh O'Brien, has announced a €3.5 billion investment in the country's electricity grid. This significant funding is part of the National Development Plan (NDP) and aims to strengthen both offshore and onshore fidelity in the grid, meeting renewable energy targets and ensuring grid resilience by 2030.
ESB Networks will receive €1.5 billion and EirGrid will receive €2 billion from this investment calculator, supporting Ireland's 2030 climate goals. This includes developing 9 GW of onshore wind, 8 GW of solar power, and 5 GW of offshore wind capacity. The fidelity login process is underway, with stakeholder submissions invited until September 11, 2025, and a final decision expected by December 2025.
Minister O'Brien stated that this investment will ensure reliable and secure electricity for homes and businesses, create jobs, and attract foreign investment. The NDP has pledged a total of €275.4 billion to 2030, with €5.6 billion allocated to climate, environment, and energy, including the €3.5 billion for the electricity grid. This €3.5 billion investment is the largest single fidelity investments in Ireland's electricity network history.
The €3.5 billion investment in Ireland's electricity grid is set to bolster the country's renewable energy capabilities and grid resilience. With stakeholder involvement and a final decision expected by the end of 2025, this significant funding aims to secure a sustainable and reliable energy future for Ireland.
