Islands in the Pacific under U.S. control with unique traditions and cultural customs

The American Samoa Historical Records Advisory Board has recently secured a series of grants to support various historical preservation projects in the territory.

In a significant move, the Board received a grant of $10,000 for a one-year project aimed at implementing the 1998 strategic plan, with a focus on the preservation and use of historical records related to American Samoa. This project will involve compiling information gathered through planning conferences, historical records workshops, meetings, surveys, and seminars.

In addition to this, the Board has been awarded a grant of $50,000 for a two-year period by the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office. This grant will support the Board's ongoing efforts to preserve and protect American Samoa's rich historical records.

The American Samoa Government has also shown its support for these initiatives. It has provided partial funding of $18,000 and $4,950 for the Board's administrative expenses. Furthermore, the Government was granted $6,422 for analyzing the current condition of historical records in American Samoa, and it has also continued its regrant project for the implementation of its 1998 strategic plan with a grant of $10,000.

The total amount of grants awarded for these projects is $114,372.

While extensive research has uncovered occasional support for historical and cultural preservation initiatives in American Samoa from U.S. federal programs during the period from 1986 to 2001, specific funded projects, amounts, and advisory board details for American Samoa during that time frame are not readily available in public online sources. For precise details and grant amounts, it is advisable to consult various archives such as the U.S. National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund records, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation archives, American Samoa Government cultural or historical offices, and federal grants databases from that era (such as the National Endowment for the Humanities or the Institute of Museum and Library Services).

These grants mark an important step forward in the preservation and protection of American Samoa's historical records, providing the necessary resources for the American Samoa Historical Records Advisory Board to continue its crucial work.

The American Samoa Historical Records Advisory Board will utilize a $10,000 grant for a year-long project, directing its focus on the finance and business aspects of implementing the 1998 strategic plan regarding historical record preservation. Moreover, the Board's ongoing efforts to safeguard American Samoa's historical records will be bolstered by a $50,000 grant from the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office over a two-year period.
