Italian President Mattarella Strengthens Ties With Azerbaijan, Inaugurates University
Italian President Sergio Mattarella recently visited Azerbaijan, where he met with President Ilham Aliyev and attended the inauguration of the Italy-Azerbaijan University. The visit highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, with Mattarella expressing Italy's support for Azerbaijan's relations with the European Union.
During his visit, Mattarella held a one-on-one meeting with Aliyev, followed by an expanded meeting. They discussed the strategic partnership between the two countries, which extends beyond economics and energy. Mattarella stressed Italy's commitment to supporting Azerbaijan's relations with the European Union.
The Italy-Azerbaijan University, inaugurated with both leaders in attendance, was described by Aliyev as a 'friendship project'. The university is a testament to the robust cooperation between the two nations.
Historically, Italy has been the leading purchaser of Azerbaijani oil. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, Azerbaijan exported approximately 9.2 million tons of crude oil to Italy, valued at $4.8 billion. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and its significance were also discussed during Mattarella's visit.
Mattarella's visit to Azerbaijan underscored Italy's commitment to its strategic partnership with the country. With the inauguration of the Italy-Azerbaijan University and the ongoing oil trade, the two nations continue to strengthen their ties.
