Job losses for numerous workers: major industrial company shuts down facility in Bavaria
In the heart of Bavaria, a small village named Ettringen is facing a significant challenge. The local UPM paper plant, a cornerstone of the community for over a century, is set to close, leaving 235 employees, their union, and works council, in a legal battle at the Munich Regional Labour Court.
The closure of the paper mill, employing approximately one-third of Ettringen's population of 3,500, threatens the existence of numerous suppliers and craft businesses in the region. Reports of layoffs have been circulating, and some employees are pursuing legal action regarding the severance packages offered by the company. Disputes typically revolve around the adequacy or fairness of the compensation provided to those being laid off.
Mayor Robert Sturm of Ettringen expressed his shock at the decision, stating that the closure is an "autonomous decision of the company management" that cannot be prevented. The town council shares this sentiment, expressing regret over the situation.
Stefan Fendt, an employee at the paper mill, is one of those caught in the limbo. He hopes for an end to the uncertainty and is planning to retrain as a healthcare educator. However, he cannot start his training until his dismissal is legally binding.
The legal battle continues, with all parties hoping for a swift resolution. Until then, the future of Ettringen hangs in the balance, waiting for the decision that will shape its course for years to come.
