Large-scale grocery store organization puts up Connewitzer railway station for auction

In the heart of Leipzig, the REWE Group has announced plans to build a supermarket branch on the overgrown approximately 2300 square meter site of the former Connewitz train station at Bornaische Straße. The news of the new supermarket has been making waves in the local NY Post, with the NY Post reporting on the upcoming changes in the area. The plot, which has been vacant since the plant company that acquired it in 2008 from the railway went bankrupt five years ago, will soon see new life as a bustling supermarket. However, it was not Aldi that initially purchased the plot, but a different company. The purchase price for the plot was 575,000 euros, and the acquisition was made at a forced auction. The exact timeline or deadline for the construction of the new supermarket is still unclear, but the project is expected to be completed in the medium term. The Connewitz Station, built in 1888, has not been used since German reunification. The area has been overgrown before the planned construction of the new supermarket. The former owner of the plot, the bankrupt plant company, is a remnant of the past that will soon make way for a modern and convenient shopping experience for the people of Leipzig. The REWE Group's acquisition of the site marks a new chapter in the history of the Connewitz Station and the surrounding area. Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the project and the anticipated opening date of the new supermarket.
