Latvian Railways Pushes Electrification Project Deadline to 2026-2027
Latvian Railways has revised the deadline for the electrification project, pushing it back to the second half of 2026 or early 2027. The project, fully funded by the European Union with €14 million, aims to improve rail connectivity in the region.
The construction of the line to Iļģuciems is currently 56% complete in terms of foundations and 28% complete in terms of poles. Despite the progress, transport expert Anrijs Matīss remains skeptical about the revised deadlines, citing incomplete reconstruction of existing platforms.
The construction of the Bolderāja stop is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with diesel trains starting to run there in early 2027. Vera Auziņa, a member of the Daugavgrīva-Bolderāja inhabitants' association, hopes the project will start on time in 2025. Residents of Daugavgrīva eagerly await the train service to their beach, although Latvian Railways has not yet considered this plan.
A mobility point is being built next to the Silikātu Street level crossing to facilitate transfers between trains, buses, bicycles, and other vehicles. The construction of this point is part of the €2.2 million allocated for the construction of Iļģuciems and Bolderāja stops, mostly funded by European sources.
The Bolderāja railway stop, planned to be visible at the level crossing, will enhance connectivity once completed. Despite the delays, the project continues to progress, with the electrification line to Iļģuciems nearing completion. The successful implementation of these improvements is expected to boost regional mobility and accessibility.
