BYD Seal 5 DM-i (Chaser 05) Makes Debut in Thailand

BYD, a leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles, has made a significant stride in the Southeast Asian market with the launch of its locally produced plug-in hybrid mid-size sedan, the Seal 5 DM-i (Chaser 05), in Thailand.

Construction of the factory where the Seal 5 DM-i is produced began on March 10, 2023, and the first right-hand-drive model rolled off the assembly line last month, marking a milestone in BYD's expansion in the region. The production of the Seal 5 DM-i at the Rayong plant is seen as a recognition and confidence in Thailand's manufacturing capabilities by BYD.

The Seal 5 DM-i offers modern hybrid technology, delivering strong hybrid performance, extended electric driving range, fuel efficiency, and safety. Key specifications and features include a length of 4,780 mm, width of 1,837 mm, height of 1,495 mm, wheelbase of 2,718 mm, and ground clearance of 160 mm. It falls into the C-segment sedan size but is positioned to compete with B-segment sedans like Toyota Yaris ATIV and Honda City in Thailand.

The Seal 5 DM-i boasts a 450-liter trunk space and a 45-liter fuel tank. It runs on BYD's DM-i platform, offering efficient fuel consumption and an extended electric driving range of up to 120 km on electric-only mode (NEDC). The car supports AC charging capability at 6.6 kW.

The Seal 5 DM-i is available in three exterior colours — Arctic White, Quantum Black, and Habour Grey — and features a black interior colour scheme. The Premium variant is priced at 699,900 Thai Baht (about 23,730 USD) as a limited-time promotion; the price for the Standard variant has not yet been announced.

BYD's entry into the Thai market is driving the development of Thailand's new energy vehicle (NEV) industry. The company has sold over 90,000 vehicles in Thailand to date and plans to create over 9,000 local jobs in the country. In addition to the Seal 5 DM-i, BYD has also brought the compact SUV Yuan Up to Malaysia.

In July, BYD sold 10,303 units of the Chaser 05 in Thailand, a decrease of 59.69 percent year-on-year and 12.94 percent month-on-month. Globally, BYD sold 80,737 vehicles in July, up 169.00 percent year-on-year but down 10.34 percent month-on-month.

The Seal 5 DM-i is the fourth locally produced model by BYD at its Thai factory. The factory began production on July 4, 2024, with the first BYD vehicle manufactured in Thailand being the 8 millionth vehicle globally.

In summary, the BYD Seal 5 DM-i (Chaser 05) in Thailand is a premium plug-in hybrid midsize sedan offering modern hybrid technology, good electric range for daily urban use, competitive dimensions, and local production advantages. Its main focus is green, efficient mobility with comfort and safety tailored to the Thai market.
