Launch of the Sixth William Sutton Prize, offering financial rewards to researchers focused on human behavior
In a bid to honour the legacy of Victorian philanthropist William Sutton, the UK's largest housing association, Clarion Housing Group, has launched its annual The William Sutton Prize. Established to breathe life into ideas about how to positively change the lives of social housing residents, the prize is split into two categories: Sustainability and Connected Communities.
The prize, which has been increased to £125,000 to mark Clarion Housing Group's 125th anniversary, aims to reward organisations or individuals with ideas to help restore and preserve the natural world through renewable energy, biodiversity, or retrofit. Additionally, the Connected Communities category, a new addition for 2025, celebrates ideas that enhance community ties and promote inclusion.
Applications for The William Sutton Prize are now open and are due to close at midday on 8 April 2025. However, at the time of writing, no official details on the prize's criteria, application deadlines, or judging panel have been released. Commonly, such details are announced on the organiser’s official website or through communications.
Clare Miller, the chief executive of Clarion Housing Group, stated that through The William Sutton Prize, they are proud to collaborate with those who are pioneering new innovations and cutting-edge thinking. Peter Murray OBE, co-founder of New London Architecture, has been appointed as a judge for The William Sutton Prize in Clarion Housing Group's 125th anniversary year. Other judges include Tara Gbolade, co-founding director of Gbolade Design Studio, Matt Harvey-Agyemang, co-founder of The POoR Collective, and Greg Fitzgerald of Vistry Group.
The Connected Communities category has been created in partnership with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA). The prize is named after William Sutton, whose legacy created Clarion Housing Group. In 1900, William Sutton left his fortune to build some of the first social housing in London.
