Lower Saxony: No blanket ban on combustion engines planned - Lies Outlines Future of Automotive Industry: Electromobility and Mixed Technologies
Lower Saxony's Minister President Olaf Lies has outlined a vision for the automotive industry's future, focusing on electric cars. He has called for a 'joint pact for the future' and dismissed talk of a combustion engine ban. Instead, he proposes a mix of technologies to meet the 2035 CO2 emissions target.
Lies has identified plug-in hybrid vehicles, synthetic fuels (e-fuels) produced from renewable energy, and biofuels as bridging technologies for the industry. He believes these can help transition towards the target of no additional CO2 emissions from new registrations by 2035.
To accelerate this shift, Lies has proposed a series of measures. These include tax breaks for electric cars and cheaper charging electricity. Lower Saxony is actively pushing for these changes ahead of the federal government's auto summit.
Lies' plan emphasizes electric cars as the key to a sustainable automotive future. He is open to other technologies as interim solutions, but the ultimate goal remains a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 2035. The Minister President's proposals aim to create a united path forward for the industry.
