The road less travelled
Flix currently lacks hotel accommodations, but with tourism on the rise, the ever-friendly town has started offering motorhome parking spaces to attract weary travelers––like Andreu, who was busily organizing a caravanning gathering on that very day. "Flix is an incredible locale. Rich in heritage and perfect for camping. Today we're checking out the anti-aircraft shelters and industrial colony," Andreu introduces himself, ready for a mix of history and adventure.
Remnants of war and industry mark Flix’s tale, involving heavy aerial bombardments during the civil war and the smell of chlorine that still lingers. Cristina, a cultural guide and local councilor, runs the “La Cana” association, sharing stories of the town's intricate history.
"Chlorine production for explosives during the Spanish Civil War caused Flix to be a military target. After the war, the Germans rebuilt the factory, spurring an industrial boom. Now, we're discussing the potential benefits of investing in tourism to revive our economy," Cristina narrates, while standing in one of the 12 remaining anti-aircraft shelters.
A buzzing future
"Our river, untapped, our heritage, unique, and our young entrepreneurs, passionate––there's life after chlorine in Flix," declares Lluís, a lively beekeeper determined to keep the Flix heart beating. It seems that "Life After Chlorine" is no myth but a testament to a town with a spirit of resilience and an eye for opportunity.
