Lifeblood Lux: Initial stage accomplished ahead of schedule by early 2026
Luxembourg Street is set to undergo a significant transformation as part of the "Lifeline Lux" project, aiming to make the area more attractive and livable. This ambitious undertaking, scheduled for completion by early 2027, has received funding of 7,971,413 euros from various sources, including the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development, and Construction, the NRW State Ministry for Home Affairs, Municipalities, Construction, and Digitalization, the "City and Country" federal special program, and the Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the state of NRW.
The project's first phase was completed in October 2024, with the second phase currently underway. By February 2026, ancillary facilities such as sidewalks, garden cabins, and new power and water lines will be constructed. Simultaneously, the sidewalks between Horbeller Street and AOK Street will be accessible again without barriers.
The heart of the project involves the creation of a traffic-calmed zone with greenery and high dwell time. This will include two roundabouts and a cycle street designated with a permitted maximum speed of 30 km/h. The second phase of construction, from Horbeller Street to house number 315 on Luxembourg Street, is planned to be completed by June 2025, while the third phase, from house number 315 to the AOK Street, is scheduled to be completed in September 2025.
In addition to these improvements, property owners can apply for free fiber optic and district heating connections. Contact details for these applications are provided. Once the construction is completed, Luxembourg Street will reopen to traffic by early 2027, with the roundabouts at Bonn Street and Horbeller Street to be constructed subsequently.

The "Lifeline Lux" project is a significant step towards making Luxembourg Street a more inviting and sustainable space for all its residents and visitors.
