Breaking News: Malaysia to Boost Affordable Special Grade Chicken Eggs After Egg Subsidy Ends

KUALA TERENNGANU, May 4 - Get ready to crack some cheaper eggs! The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) is gearing up to increase production of special grade chicken eggs following the government's decision to roll back egg subsidies beginning August 1.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu shared this exciting news with reporters, explaining that the move aims to provide the public with a more budget-friendly egg option while ensuring price stability.

During the Pasaran Ramadan (March) this year, special grade eggs were sold at RM5 per tray, but the minister couldn't confirm the exact pricing this time around. Regardless, he's confident that the price hike won't break the bank.

"We're not going to let your pocket feel the sting!" he assured.

In preparation for the subsidy withdrawal, the government has partnered with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to implement a series of measures to minimize the public's financial burden. One of these measures includes market commitments for special grade eggs at reasonable prices.

On top of special grade eggs, consumers can also check out nationwide initiatives like Jualan Agro MADANI and Jualan Rahmah for affordable egg options.

The decision to end egg subsidies and loosen price controls was made through collaborative discussions with industry stakeholders, claims Mohamad. And rest assured, the changes are being implemented gradually to avoid a sudden increase in egg prices.

In an effort to capitalize on the growing demand, the minister also brought up the idea of cultivating local aromatic young coconuts, such as pandan coconuts, for the Chinese market. With over 1.4 billion people in China, this could be a goldmine, he suggested.

Previously, the Agriculture Department Director-General Datuk Nor Sam Alwi stated that the opening of the fresh young coconut market to China under the Phytosanitary Requirements Protocol reflects strengthened biosecurity measures and increased standardization in quality young coconut production[1]. Malaysia plans to primarily export these fragrant young coconuts for fresh beverage consumption[2].
