Mars to Cut Virgin Plastics with Recycled PP in Pet Food Packaging
Mars, Incorporated has teamed up with Huhtamaki and SABIC to reduce its reliance on virgin plastics. The company is set to use recycled polypropylene plastic in the primary packaging for some of its popular pet food brands, marking a significant step towards its sustainability goals.
The initiative, part of Mars' Sustainable Packaging Plan, aims to use 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025. Mars began piloting this project in Europe in 2020 and plans to increase volumes in 2021, with ambitions to expand to other brands.
The recycled plastic will be produced using an advanced recycling process, ensuring it's suitable for new food-grade packaging. This process, used by Plastic Energy and Faerch, will help Mars achieve its goal of using 30% recycled plastics and reducing virgin plastic use by 25%.
SABIC's certified circular products offer a carbon footprint reduction of 2kg of CO2 for every kilogram of polymer produced diverted from incineration. Huhtamaki, on the other hand, aims to design 100% of its products to be recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2030.
Mars' partnership with Huhtamaki and SABIC is set to reduce virgin plastics use across its packaging portfolio. The initiative, launching in Europe in 2023, will help Mars meet its sustainability goals and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.
