Mersey Bridges See Digital Payment Boom, Over 93% of Users Go Cashless

The Mersey Gateway Bridge and the Silver Jubilee Bridge have witnessed a significant shift in payment methods. Over 81,000 vehicles traverse the bridges daily, with the majority now utilizing digital payment systems. This is the highest number since the Mersey Gateway Bridge opened in 2017.

From July to September 2024, over 6.74 million journeys were made across the River Mersey in Halton. This equates to over 2 million vehicles each month. The shift towards digital payment is evident, with over 93% of customers now using automated methods. This has resulted in a high on-time payment rate, with over 97.4% of journeys promptly paid for.

The Mersey Gateway Bridge has been particularly popular, with over 86% of vehicles using it. This has contributed to the highest number of digital payments recorded since the bridge opened in 2017. The convenience and efficiency of digital payment methods are clear from these figures.

The increase in digital payment methods for bridge crossings is a testament to the convenience and efficiency they offer. With over 93% of customers now using these methods, and over 97.4% of journeys paid for on time, the future of road user charging seems to be heading towards automation.
