Metro-North commuters in Connecticut may face an increase in fares by up to 10% as the MTA contemplates the decision.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) has proposed a fare increase for Metro-North rail commuters, with the MTA's joint Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road committee set to vote on the matter this Wednesday.
The proposed fare hike is a 10% increase, split into two 5% hikes. The first hike is scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2023, with an optional second hike in July 2026. This structure aims to generate additional revenue of $1.4 million in 2025 and $16 million in 2026.
The fare increase would apply to Metro-North trips that start or end at a Connecticut station, as these stations are owned, operated, and maintained by ConnDOT. Sixty-five percent of the rail cars operating on the New Haven line belong to Connecticut, identifiable by the red stripe running down their side.
The proposed hike has sparked controversy, with committee members Gerard Bringmann, Neal Zuckerman, and Midori Valdivia expressing opposition to the 10% increase. Bringmann argues against the 4% increase towards the end of 2025, referencing the MTA's planned fare hike. However, he does not express opposition to the optional 5% fare hike in July 2026.
ConnDOT's budgetary constraints, due to underfunding from Connecticut's legislature, are the primary reason for the proposed fare hike. The agency needs to cover costs related to track upgrades, maintenance, and rail car ownership and operation.
The potential impacts of the fare hike include a significant rise in commuting costs for Connecticut riders, public dissatisfaction and criticism, possible equity concerns, and increased revenue to sustain current service levels and maintenance, preventing service cuts as planned by ConnDOT.
Despite the opposition, the MTA board's joint committee has moved the fare hike's approval to Wednesday's full-board meeting. The debate continues as stakeholders weigh the need for budgetary support against the potential burden on commuters.
