Metro Stations on the Green Line Temporarily Closed Over Weekend, Shuttle Services Implemented as Alternatives
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced that phase two of the Summer 2025 Major Construction project will affect several stations along the Green Line, with significant closures, repairs, and improvements scheduled from August 2 to August 31, 2025.
During this period, key transit hubs such as Branch Avenue, Suitland, and Nayor Road stations in Prince George’s and Charles counties will be closed for the entire month. Additionally, the Southern Avenue, Congress Heights, and Anacostia stations will be closed on the weekends of August 9–10 and August 16–17. Green Line service will terminate at Southern Avenue or Anacostia as applicable on closure days.
To accommodate riders, WMATA is providing two free shuttle bus services. A local shuttle will run every 8 to 10 minutes between Branch Avenue, Suitland, Naylor Road, and Southern Avenue stations. An express shuttle will offer a direct connection between Branch Avenue and Southern Avenue, also running every 8 to 10 minutes.
The construction work is focused on major repairs, including station refurbishments and infrastructure upgrades to improve safety and service reliability on the Green Line. The emphasis is on handling essential maintenance and enhancements during this intensive construction period.
While specific repair details beyond station closures are not fully described, the project aims to enhance the Green Line infrastructure for improved long-term service reliability and rider experience. No information suggests elevator or accessibility upgrades specific to these Green Line stations in phase two, unlike unrelated station rehabilitations noted elsewhere in the system.
In addition to station repairs, the construction will result in the closure of the Congress Heights and Southern Avenue stops on Saturdays and Sundays from August 16 to 17. Construction crews will also upgrade the train control system during the Metro closures. Rail improvements, including rail renewal, tie replacement, ballast tamping, and grout pad replacement for a better ride, will be conducted.
Notably, the obsolete signal system will be replaced as part of the construction, serving as a bridge to the next generation signaling system. The installation of new, brighter tunnel lighting and platform edge lights will also be carried out for improved visibility.
This phase of the project marks an important effort to enhance the Green Line infrastructure and is expected to contribute to improved long-term service reliability and rider experience. The same stops were previously closed on August 7, 2023. Station signage will be updated to improve customer communications throughout the construction period.
- The construction project on the Green Line, scheduled from August 2 to August 31, 2025, will not only target station repairs but also includes upgrades in the finance sector, as WMATA is providing free shuttle bus services for public-transit riders.
- As part of the Summer 2025 Major Construction project, the obsolete signal system will be replaced, marking an essential stride in the transportation industry, transitioning towards a next-generation signaling system.
