Railways undergoing modernization during station shutdowns across MV - Modernization efforts during temporary rail shutdown
From August 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) will embark on a significant modernization project along the Hamburg-Berlin railway line, encompassing 28 traffic stations, including Schwerin. This extensive renovation will focus on infrastructure improvements, control and safety system upgrades, and enhanced traffic management facilities.
The modernization plan includes renewing over 180 kilometres of track and approximately 200 switches, building six new transfer points to facilitate overtaking of slower freight trains, and upgrading control and safety systems, including the construction of new signal boxes. Outdated signal boxes and control systems will be replaced in surrounding sections, such as Hagenow Stadt – Hagenow Land – Schwerin Süd – Ludwigslust, which is relevant to Schwerin station.
While specific details for Schwerin station's modernization are not yet available, it is expected to benefit from upgraded signalling, modernized infrastructure, and improved operational flexibility, consistent with the overall project goals in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. During this period, regional rail services through Schwerin will be replaced by a comprehensive bus substitution service to maintain connectivity, supported by real-time travel information and alternative route planning.
Four of the modernized stations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – Strohkirchen, Jasnitz, Ludwigslust, and Grabow – are set to receive the "Future Station" seal. In Ludwigslust, three new elevators will be installed, and all platforms will be extended to 416 meters. At all modernized locations, weather shelters will be renewed, and digital displays will be expanded.
Deutsche Bahn has assured passengers that they will remain mobile throughout the entire renovation, both in regional and long-distance traffic. The Hamburg-Berlin line is one of the most important direct connections, with 230 trains and up to 30,000 passengers per day. This modernization project is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and accessibility of rail travel in Germany.
