Edmonton's Whitemud Drive Rainbow Valley Bridges Upgrade Progress

The Whitemud Drive Rainbow Valley Bridges upgrade project in Edmonton is a significant infrastructure initiative scheduled from 2024 through 2026. Here’s an overview of the upgrade progress and anticipated traffic pattern changes during this period:

Project Scope

The project involves upgrading the Rainbow Valley Bridges, which carry Whitemud Drive over the Rainbow Valley ravine and nearby areas. The upgrades include structural rehabilitation, deck replacement, expansion to accommodate increased traffic volumes, and improvements to ensure long-term durability and safety. Additional works include enhanced pedestrian and cyclist pathways, improved lighting, and upgraded drainage systems.

Upgrade Progress (2024-2026)

In 2024, preliminary work including site preparation, utility relocations, and mobilization was carried out. Initial phases of bridge deck and structural component repairs on one bridge were also initiated to maintain traffic flow on the other.

In 2025, major construction activities focusing on bridge deck replacement and structural reinforcement will take place. Partial bridge closures and lane reductions will be implemented to facilitate construction.

In 2026, the completion of structural and surface upgrades is expected. Final landscaping, signage, and pedestrian/cyclist amenity enhancements will follow, along with the restoration and cleanup of construction zones.

Traffic Pattern Changes

Single-lane closures and lane shifts will be implemented to maintain traffic flow, which may result in reduced lanes during peak hours. Reduced speed limits will be in place for safety around construction zones. Possible full closures during off-peak or weekend times will enable more intensive construction activities. Detours may be implemented on occasion, with advance public notices. Pedestrian/cyclist access will likely be rerouted temporarily with clear signage to ensure safety.

Tips for Commuters and Residents

Commuters and residents are advised to plan for potential delays during peak travel times, follow posted construction signage and flagger directions, utilize alternative routes where possible, and stay updated on project progress through the City of Edmonton’s transportation advisories.

The city has rehabilitated, widened, and added a pedestrian/cyclist bridge to the north bridge. Traffic disruptions are expected along Whitemud Drive due to the Rainbow Valley Bridge construction. A traffic pattern shift to the completed north bridge is upcoming this month to accommodate construction work on the eastbound Rainbow Valley Bridge.

The work on Whitemud Drive is part of Stage 2 of the Terwillegar Drive expansion project, which started in 2021 and is expected to take five years to complete. The westbound lanes of the Whitemud over the north bridge have been closed since February 2024, and the traffic on Whitemud Drive has been flowing over one of the Rainbow Valley Bridges for a year and a half. Construction crews have been working on the area for the past week or so, primarily overnight. The final pieces of the north bridge construction will be put in place overnight this weekend and during the first half of next week. The eastbound Whitemud Drive bridge will be widened and renewed for the rest of 2025, with completion expected in 2026.

For more detailed information on specific timelines or traffic advisories, contacting Edmonton’s Transportation Services or checking their project webpage would be recommended. The Terwillegar Drive expansion project aims to upgrade Terwillegar Drive to an expressway instead of a light-free freeway to save costs. The work on Whitemud Drive will result in two lanes of traffic flowing in each direction on the new north/westbound bridge. Stage 3 of the Terwillegar Drive expansion project includes further road widening, upgrades to the Terwillegar Drive and Anthony Henday Drive interchanges, and adding dedicated transit lanes and a shared-use path. Work on the Terwillegar Drive and Anthony Henday Drive interchanges is already underway as part of Stage 3. An additional 142 Street pedestrian bridge linking the Brookside and Bulyea Heights neighbourhoods has been added as part of the Whitemud work, which was put in place earlier this year. More lane reductions are coming to the Rainbow Valley Bridge section of Whitemud Drive. Two-way traffic has been redirected to the eastbound lanes on the south bridge since the closure of the north bridge. The westbound north bridge is now nearly completed, with the road surface paved and lines painted. The exact date for when traffic will flip to the completed north bridge hasn’t yet been determined.

The city's investment in the Whitemud Drive Rainbow Valley Bridges upgrade project includes improvements in industries such as transportation and finance, with the project's funding coming from the city's budget for infrastructure development. Due to the construction, the project may affect the flow of traffic in the finance sector, including potential delays for commuters and businesses reliant on the Whitemud Drive corridor.
