Usually, an emotional response like anger or fear kicks in because we feel powerless and out of control. Many of us struggle to handle these feelings. What about you? When faced with an outcome beyond your grasp, how do you react? Do you unravel, unsure of how to move forward? Let's dive into some effective methods to handle these situations. If anxiety creeps in, what can you do to transform from anxiety and chaos to a state of serenity?

Are you a naturally curious individual?

Curiosity, my friend, is a potent tool. When we're overcome with emotions, our thinking and logic skills take a backseat. Curiosity, through questioning, draws us out of the emotional brain and leads us back into the logical prefrontal cortex. Asking questions can help calm you down, enabling you to adapt and respond to the unknown with flexibility.

Kids are the ultimate champions of the curious mindset. Think about a child growing up. Kids are naturally curious, always asking questions. As we grow older, many of us lose this innate curiosity, becoming set on being prepared and always having an answer.

What's truly in your control?

In my book, Cognitive Enlightenment, I explore the harsh truth – there's very little in life that we can truly control. We have control only over our thoughts, words, actions, and reactions. How many times have we complained about the weather or a bad driver? We all have, right? When you become aware of what's affecting you that's outside of your control, you can begin to let go and accept things for what they are.

In my work with individuals, I tell them that if they have the awareness and intention to change their behavior, it will happen with time. Extending compassion to yourself and others is crucial to managing the unknowns and uncertainties. Start with small things, such as altering your morning routine or limiting your exposure to stress-inducing news, until they become habits. Then, move on to bigger issues such as work-related problems.

I once had a client who was exasperated with a top manager's performance. Before confronting the manager, I coached the client to use the curious tool. Instead of confronting someone, curiosity encourages dialogue and exploration of what went wrong or what's happening. Confrontation typically puts the other person on the defensive, shattering communication. Curiosity questions often begin with "how" or "what." I often coach my clients to start with, "Help me understand … " This invitation to discover often leads to learning what has impacted performance.

My client learned that the manager was bullying their team, but the manager's superior had no idea because the manager appeared delightful towards them. This is often the case, where managing down is different from managing up. When the client inquired with curiosity about the employee whose performance was lackluster, the employee opened up about the manager's behavior and mentioned they felt threatened because any negative feedback would lead to retaliation. Bullying at work negatively affects performance.

By asking questions and being curious, the client I coached learned what actions to take. And I reminded him to use the curiosity tool with the manager as well.

In conclusion, handling the uncertainties life throws our way requires a shift in mindset. By embracing curiosity, we can navigate these hurdles more effectively. Curiosity helps us shift from an emotional response to a logical one, enabling us to ask questions and explore possibilities.

Recognizing what's within our control and letting go of what's not can lead to a more peaceful and productive life. By extending compassion to ourselves and others, and by using curiosity as a tool, we can better manage the complexities of today. Remember, it's not about having all the answers but about being open to discovery and growth.
