New Advancement in Porto's Metro System

Porto Metro's Pink Line Delayed but On Track for 2026

The much-anticipated Pink Line (Casa da Música - São Bento) project of Porto Metro is now expected to begin commercial operations in the first quarter of 2026, marking a delay from the previously anticipated completion dates of July 2025 and later the end of 2025.

The final tunnel section between Casa da Música and Galiza stations was only recently completed, and officials estimate about six more months are needed to finish all works and prepare for operation. The principal reason for the delay is the extended timeline for completing the tunneling and associated infrastructure works.

Regarding the Ruby Line (Santo Ovídio - Casa da Música), it is planned to launch concurrently with or shortly after the Pink Line around the end of 2025, although no more precise operational date has been confirmed in the latest available information.

The Pink Line will connect to the current Casa da Música and São Bento metro stations, with intermediate stations at Hospital de Santo António and Praça da Galiza. The new Casa da Música station will house both the Pink Line (Casa da Música - São Bento) and the Ruby Line (Santo Ovídio - Casa da Música). The project, approximately 3.5 kilometres long, is entirely underground.

The Pink Line project has a cost of €304.7 million, and by 2030, 29% of transportation energy must be renewable, and decarbonisation goals, including CO2 targets, must be met to avoid penalties.

Tiago Braga, president of Porto Metro, prefers to focus on the progress made rather than dwell on the delay in the project. He emphasizes the absence of serious accidents during the project and considers the completion of a tunnel to be the most significant milestone in a geotechnical project. With the completion of the tunnel, the project becomes more controllable and less risky.

She emphasized the need for a cultural shift from individual to public transportation if it provides added value, particularly in travel time. Cristina Pinto Dias, the Secretary of State for Mobility, was present at the event.

It is important to note that this information is current as of August 2025 and comes from official statements and recent project developments reported in the media. The delay in the project is attributed to the geological characteristics and geotechnical engineering of the terrain. Everything possible was done to ensure the project was completed under the best possible circumstances, with safety being a priority.

| Line | Estimated Completion/Operations Start | Initial Planned Date | Reason for Delay | |------------|--------------------------------------|---------------------|-----------------------------------------| | Pink Line | Q1 2026 | July 2025 / end 2025 | Delay in tunnel and infrastructure completion | | Ruby Line | Around end of 2025 or shortly after | End of 2025 | Likely dependent on Pink Line progress |

The delays impact the overall project timeline by shifting the commercial launch into early 2026, affecting service availability and possibly related network integration plans. The Pink Line's completion will significantly improve public transportation options in Porto, making travel more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The delay in the completion of the Pink Line project, a crucial development in Porto's transportation industry, has necessitated a shift in its expected commercial operations from the end of 2025 to Q1 2026. Despite this delay, the finance sector may still recognize the project as a significant investment, given its potential to boost the city's public-transit system and contribute to renewable energy goals in the transportation sector by 2030.
