New DES Minister Probes Alleged 40M Baht Bribe to Halt Online Scam Crackdowns
New DES Minister Chaichanok Chidchob has launched an investigation into allegations of a 40-million-baht monthly bribe offered to halt crackdowns on online scams and illegal websites. The bribe was allegedly offered to Chaichanok by intermediaries in exchange for leniency towards call-centre scam gangs and unlawful online platforms.
Chaichanok has instructed the ministry's permanent secretary to gather evidence swiftly and establish the facts. Legal action is threatened against any complicit officials. Despite extensive searches, no information has been found about who allegedly made the offer.
The previous DES Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong, has denied these allegations, stating that no such offers were made during his tenure. Prasert claims that under his leadership, losses from online crime were significantly reduced by more than half. He also highlighted that the DES Ministry received prestigious awards for its anti-cybercrime efforts during his time in office.
DES Minister Chaichanok Chidchob is determined to uncover the truth behind these allegations. The investigation aims to maintain the integrity of the ministry and ensure the safety of Thai citizens from online criminal activities.
