New district under development, Essen 51, promises 1,700 new apartments
The Thelen Group, a prominent Essen-based company, has announced its investment of around one billion euros in the development of a new city quarter named Essen 51. The plan, unveiled on 16th September 2025, aims to create a vibrant and sustainable community in the heart of the Ruhr region.
The development will primarily be funded through equity, loans, and potential contributions from other investors. Thelen Group has stated that they do not require a partner in project planning for Essen 51.
Excavation for the project is expected to begin as early as 2027, with construction spanning over 10 to 15 years. The site, which was initially renovated by the Thelen Group about a decade ago, will be divided into areas for business, living, and leisure.
At the heart of Essen 51, the restored shaft structure of the former Zeche Amalie will stand as a testament to the region's industrial past. The plan includes the construction of approximately 1,700 apartments of various sizes, some of which will be for sale or rent, accommodating up to five rooms.
Affordable housing is also part of the plan, ensuring that the new city quarter caters to a diverse range of residents. For families, a school, three kindergartens, retail facilities, and a police station are planned. Catering facilities may also be included.
Two parking garages will be built at the edges of Essen 51 to facilitate the needs of residents and visitors. However, the city quarter will not have a through road, promoting a pedestrian-friendly environment. Good connections to the cycling network, including the Ruhr Radschnellweg (RS1), will ensure easy accessibility.
A tram line will connect Essen 51 before further construction measures, making it easily accessible by public transport. The development plan is available for viewing at the Germany House in Essen until 16th October or can be accessed online.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and construction crisis, the Thelen Group remains committed to bringing Essen 51 to life. The search results do not provide information about the name of the main project manager for the construction of the Cityquartier "Essen 51."
As the construction progresses, Essen 51 is set to become an integral part of the Ruhr region, offering a modern and sustainable living environment while preserving its historical charm.
