Going After the Gambling Industry: Ukraine's Unenlightened Tax Crackdown

Gambling establishments across Ukraine have been hit with a wave of unforeseen fines by tax authorities, leaving many companies pleading their cases in court. According to Forbes.ua, this turmoil was as predictable as a wanting wallet after a night at the casino.

Right before the tax man's hammer dropped, the State Fiscal Service had estimated that tax losses due to elusive schemes were costing the government a staggering 2 billion UAH each month. Daniil Getmanets, the head of the customs committee, made it clear that it's high time gambling companies start coughing up their winnings... or face the consequences.

However, the cat's out of the bag, and it seems these fines are anything but taxes. A top-dog muckety-muck from a market-leading company speak-easily admitted to the publication that parts of these "payments" are actually fines for technicalities, like not using a cash register – always legally optional, but now, apparently, a costly oversight.

The tax authorities seem to be skirting the generally accepted process, as entrepreneurs have the right to challenge the action, followed by a tax decision that can be appealed again. But, the figures were out before the ink even dried on the final decision.

According to an insider, the biggest payments were dished out to big names like Cosmolot, Pin-UP, Vbet, Favbet, and First Casino. Both Vbet and Favbet have promised to fight the fines, claiming "they're going to throw down the gloves and stand their ground" in a legal showdown.

Deputy Head of the Tax Committee, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, unveiled a top-5 list of the most significant additional taxes slapped on these companies. The heavyweights include a mind-bending 22.5 billion UAH for one online casino, another staggering 19.5 billion for another. A bookmaker company didn't escape light, getting hit with 5.6 billion, while a gaming machines operator was slapped with a "cough it up" order of 1.3 billion.

It seems the gambling industry in Ukraine is nothing more than a relatively fresh, fair game of chance – but this time, it's the house that's winning big.
