New German Traffic Rules Tighten Middle Lane Use, Relax Right-of-Way
German traffic regulations are set to change, aiming to improve road safety and efficiency. Drivers will soon face stricter penalties for improper middle lane use, and the right-of-way rule will be relaxed. These changes, effective from June 2023, aim to reduce dangerous lane changes and serpentine driving.
Under the new rules, drivers who hinder others by wrongfully using the middle lane may face a fine of 80 euros and a point in Flensburg. Currently, drivers are advised to drive as far to the right as possible in various situations, as stated in the StVO. However, the relaxation of the right-of-way rule aims to address common issues.
The '20-second rule' allows drivers to use the right lane with the same speed for 20 seconds, provided there are no vehicles on the right from time to time. This rule, however, only applies to two-lane roads. On roads with more than three lanes, the guideline applies to the second lane from the right. On three-lane roads, drivers may use the middle lane continuously without constantly switching to gaps on the right side. These exceptions to the right-of-way rule are not widely known and aim to improve traffic flow and safety.
The new traffic regulations, effective from June 2023, aim to improve road safety and efficiency by addressing improper middle lane use and relaxing the right-of-way rule. Drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with these changes to avoid penalties and ensure safe driving.
