New Greek Traffic Law Imposes Severe Fines and Penalties
Greece has introduced a new traffic law, effective September 13, 2025, with severe fines and strict enforcement. Motorists must be aware of these changes to avoid hefty penalties and license suspensions.
Illegal parking can now cost between 20 and 150 euros, with vehicles being immobilized for days. Drunk driving can result in fines up to 350 euros and license suspension, with higher blood alcohol concentrations potentially leading to jail time. Using a phone while driving can incur fines up to 2,000 euros and license suspension up to a year. Exceeding the 30 km/h speed limit in residential areas by more than 20 km/h can result in fines of at least 100 euros. Not wearing a helmet or seatbelt can lead to high fines, up to 2,000 euros for multiple offenses. Wild camping and parking campers on beaches, archaeological sites, or in forests can result in fines up to 3,000 euros. Losing one's license, even temporarily, can end a vacation and requires waiting out the suspension period and paying the fine to retrieve it.
The new Greek traffic law imposes significant fines and penalties for various offenses. Motorists are advised to adhere to traffic rules to avoid financial penalties, loss of mobility, and time. In case of license suspension, the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde in Germany is responsible for re-acquisition of driving licenses.
