NHPC Ltd Reiterates Commitment to Siang Upper Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh
NHPC Ltd has reiterated its commitment to developing the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) in Arunachal Pradesh. The project, led by General Manager Amar Nath Jha, aims to balance hydropower generation with environmental preservation and community welfare. NHPC officials have emphasized the importance of open dialogue with local communities and stakeholders.
NHPC Ltd has expressed its desire to make the SUMP a model of sustainable and inclusive development. The project is envisioned to promote flood moderation, water security, renewable energy generation, local development, and long-term ecological stability in the Siang basin.
NHPC's general manager Amar Nath Jha emphasized the project's benefits and the importance of open dialogue with local communities. He appealed to the All Bodo Students' Coordination (ABK) to support the pre-feasibility report (PFR) and raise awareness among local communities about the project's importance. NHPC officials provided clarifications and stressed their readiness to work transparently with all stakeholders.
During a consultative meeting, ABK president Tanon Tatak, SIFF president Amok Padung, and secretary Likeng Libang raised queries about project components, environmental impact, and rehabilitation measures. In response, Tatak proposed further consultations with project-affected families (PAFs) and a subsequent joint meeting with the state government and NHPC officials.
NHPC Ltd has committed to developing the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) as a transformative project for Arunachal Pradesh. The preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) and related studies, including environmental impact assessment (EIA), will involve consultations at every stage. NHPC's commitment to transparency and inclusive development is expected to ensure the project's success while minimizing its environmental impact and maximizing its benefits for the local community.
