The long-awaited Anavgay - Palana winter road in northern Kamchatka Krai has officially been opened, providing a crucial transportation link between the Tigil District and the region's mainland. Stretching 225 kilometres, this winter road is now a lifeline for the communities it connects, including Tigil, Esso, Palana, Lesnaya, and Voiampolka.

The daily capacity of the winter road is limited to 50 vehicles, and it is equipped to handle vehicles up to 20 tons, including all-terrain vehicles and heavy trucks. This new transportation link is a significant addition to the region, which has relied heavily on marine navigation for supplies due to the harsh winter conditions.

In preparation for the winter season, emergency and fire rescue teams have been established in Tigil and Esso villages to ensure the safety of those using the winter road. The current Minister for Emergency Situations in Kamchatka Krai, Vladimir Chernov, has stated that they are prepared for any unexpected situations.

Sergei Lebedev, the Minister of Emergencies of Kamchatka Krai, expressed his enthusiasm for the road's opening, saying, "We are eager to see the public make use of this new transportation link. It will greatly improve the lives of those living in the Tigil District and beyond."

Indeed, people are already taking advantage of the winter road for travel, with many using it to reach Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and other destinations. The winter road passes through hilly terrain with a single lane that is 4.5 metres wide, offering a challenging but passable route for those brave enough to navigate it.

The opening of the Anavgay - Palana winter road has been welcomed with open arms by the public, who have long awaited this much-needed transportation link. As winter approaches, this road will play a vital role in connecting the communities of northern Kamchatka Krai and ensuring their continued access to essential supplies and services.
